The Bloodhound SSC (SuperSonic Car) is an ambitious project to set the land speed record to 1000 miles per hour (Mach 1.4), beating the predecessor ThrustSSC by more than 235 mph. Development of the car could be finished this year, the record could be attacked in 2011, depending on how well funding works out.

Developing this car requires expertise from almost all engineering disciplines, and I’m happy to see that my field, computational fluid dynamics, plays a crucial role. Of course it does. Or do you know about a large wind tunnel that achieves supersonic speeds? See.

The project team tweets and is on facebook.
